How to Add a Career Break on LinkedIn (And Write It With Confidence)
How to Add a Career Break on LinkedIn (And Write It With Confidence)
A gap is not the problem. Silence is.
Maybe you stepped away to raise your children. To care for a parent. To move countries. To recover, retrain, or simply rest.
Whatever the reason, the hardest part of coming back is often the profile. Your last job ends a few years ago, and then nothing. You worry that is all a recruiter will see. So how do you show a career break on LinkedIn without it feeling like a red flag?
Here is something that helps. When LinkedIn launched its career break feature, it shared that 51% of hirers are more likely to contact a candidate who gives context about their career break. An explained gap reads very differently from an unexplained one.

Where to find the career break option on LinkedIn
- Go to your profile.
- Click Add profile section, just under your name.
- Under Core, choose Add career break.
- Pick a type for your break.
- Add your start and end dates. Location is optional.
- Add a description. This is where the real value is.
- Save.
Your career break now sits inside your Experience section, in its right place on your timeline. Button labels may look slightly different over time, but the option stays in the same area.
Which career break type should you choose?
LinkedIn offers 13 types. They include caregiving, full-time parenting, relocation, career transition, professional development, health and well-being, travel, voluntary work, and layoff or position eliminated.
Pick the one closest to the truth. You do not owe anyone more detail than you are comfortable sharing. If your break was for your health, choosing that type is enough. Nobody needs your medical history.
If more than one applies, choose the main reason and mention the rest in your description.
What to write in your career break description
Keep it to three short parts:
- What the break was. One line. Plain and calm.
- What you did or kept up. Courses, certifications, volunteering, freelance projects, running a household budget, coordinating care. Real things count.
- What you are ready for now. The kind of role you want next.
Here are two examples you can adapt.
Took a planned break to care for my young children. During this time I completed a Google Analytics certification and handled social media for a local non-profit as a volunteer. Now ready to return to digital marketing roles, open to hybrid or part-time.
Relocated from Dubai to Chennai with my family. Used the move to complete a certification in HR analytics and helped two small businesses with hiring on a freelance basis. Looking for HR generalist roles in Chennai.
Notice what these do not do. They do not apologise. They do not over-explain. They say what happened and point forward.
Four mistakes that make a gap look worse
Apologising. Lines like “Unfortunately I had to take time off” make the break sound like a problem. It is not one.
Hiding the dates. Recruiters notice missing years anyway. A labelled break is better than a blank space.
Inventing a job to cover it. A vague “Consultant” title with nothing behind it raises more questions than an honest break. If you did freelance work, list it as freelance work. If you did not, use the career break.
Stopping at the break. Your career break explains the past. Your headline and About section still need to say where you are going.
Then tell recruiters you are ready
Once your break is on your profile, make sure recruiters know you are back. Update your headline to the role you want now. Then switch on Open to Work.
If you would like part-time or flexible roles, or you would rather only recruiters see it, here is how to set Open to Work for part-time roles without the green banner.
Your break is part of your story
Time away from paid work is not empty time. Most people come back with more patience, better judgement, and a clearer sense of what they want.
Your profile can say that. Calmly and clearly, in your own words.
